How Many Views Is Viral on TikTok? Real Thresholds by Account Size
There isn't one number. For an account with 5,000 followers, 31,000 views puts a video in its top 10%. For an account with a million followers, the same top 10% starts at 1.5 million.
So the useful question is "viral compared to what?" We measured it three ways on 3,937 TikTok videos from 209 creators: against the creator's own usual views, against their follower count, and against everyone else their size. The data is from October 2026.
The short answer
- A video is doing well at 2x the creator's usual views. About one in four videos gets there.
- 5x the usual is a breakout. About one in nine videos gets there, and 84% of creators had at least one in their last 20 or so posts.
- 10x is rare but not unusual. About one in 14 videos, at every account size.
- By raw views, the top 10% starts at: 31,000 for accounts under 10,000 followers, 126,000 for 10,000 to 100,000, 601,000 for 100,000 to a million, and 1.5 million above a million.
Is 10k views viral on TikTok?
For a small account, it's a good result. For a big one, it's a bad day. Here's how often videos crossed common milestones, by account size:
| Followers | Got 10k+ views | Got 100k+ views | Got 1M+ views |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1k to 10k | 23% | 4.8% | 0.5% |
| 10k to 100k | 46% | 11% | 1.5% |
| 100k to 1M | 74% | 31% | 6% |
| 1M+ | 94% | 62% | 14% |
If you have under 10,000 followers, 10,000 views beats about three-quarters of videos from accounts your size. 100,000 views is top 5%, and a million is one in two hundred.
The view counts that count as top 10% and top 1%
| Followers | Median video | Top 25% from | Top 10% from | Top 5% from | Top 1% from |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1k to 10k | 2,236 | 8,430 | 31,485 | 70,461 | 606,470 |
| 10k to 100k | 8,395 | 27,130 | 125,769 | 305,745 | 1,313,873 |
| 100k to 1M | 32,493 | 153,622 | 601,175 | 1,171,116 | 5,070,704 |
| 1M+ | 156,093 | 485,986 | 1,470,021 | 2,916,996 | 8,672,433 |
These are views on videos 7 to 180 days old, so they had time to settle. The gaps are huge: the top 1% of videos get roughly 50 to 270 times the median. That's why averages are useless on TikTok. One video can carry an account's numbers for a month.
Viral compared with the creator's usual
The fairest test is against the creator's own median. A 2x video got twice their usual views.
| Followers | 2x or more | 5x or more | 10x or more | Under half |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1k to 10k | 21.5% | 10.5% | 6.7% | 14.7% |
| 10k to 100k | 24.8% | 11.3% | 6.8% | 15.4% |
| 100k to 1M | 26.3% | 12.6% | 8.6% | 18.9% |
| 1M+ | 24.5% | 11.5% | 6.0% | 17.1% |
The rates hardly change with size. A creator with 3,000 followers is about as likely as one with 3 million to have a video take off compared with their own normal. Flops are just as common: one video in six gets less than half the usual.
Breakouts are also concentrated. Each creator's best recent video got a median of 17 to 19 times their usual views, and on its own made up a third or more of all their views in the period.
Viral compared with followers
Getting more views than you have followers is common for small accounts and rare for big ones:
| Followers | Views beat follower count | Views 2x followers | Views 10x followers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1k to 10k | 36% | 24% | 7.9% |
| 10k to 100k | 20% | 13.5% | 3.1% |
| 100k to 1M | 17% | 11% | 2.9% |
| 1M+ | 7% | 2.8% | 0.3% |
If you have 5,000 followers and a video passes 50,000 views, you're in the top 8% of videos from accounts your size.
What breakout videos have in common
We compared videos that got at least 5x the creator's usual views (445 videos) with videos that landed close to normal (1,999 videos). Length, hashtags and captions were almost identical. What differed was how people reacted:
| Per view | Breakouts (5x+) | Typical videos |
|---|---|---|
| Shares | 0.36% | 0.16% |
| Saves | 0.94% | 0.55% |
| Likes | 7.0% | 7.0% |
| Comments | 0.05% | 0.12% |
| Median length | 46 seconds | 44 seconds |
| Hashtags | 5 | 5 |
Breakout videos were shared more than twice as often per view, and saved 70% more often. Likes per view were the same. Comments per view were lower, because a breakout reaches many people who watch without commenting.
This doesn't prove shares cause breakouts. The videos that travel are the ones people send to someone or keep for later. But it does suggest what to aim for: a video worth sending or saving, not just liking. It also suggests what not to worry about. A breakout wasn't longer, shorter or better tagged than a normal video.
How to tell if your video is viral
- Work out your usual. Take the median views of your last 20 videos that are at least a week old. Ignore pinned videos.
- Divide the new video's views by that number. 2x is a strong video, 5x is a breakout, 10x is a hit.
- Check its shares and saves per view. If they're well above your usual, it's likely to keep climbing.
- Wait a week before judging. Most of a TikTok's views come in the first days, but a video under a week old is still moving.
To check any creator's numbers with code, see the script in TikTok benchmarks 2026. It calculates the median, the multiple and the share of videos at 2x or more for any account.
How we did it
- Sample: 230 creators across 15 niches and four follower bands, found through TikTok keyword search, and their latest posts, pulled on 19 October 2026 with SociaVault's TikTok videos endpoint.
- Videos counted: 3,937 videos, 7 to 180 days old, not pinned, from 209 creators. For comparisons with the creator's usual, we used the 194 creators with at least 8 such videos.
- "Usual": the median views of the creator's videos in the same window.
- Cost: 742 credits for the TikTok data, which also powers our other TikTok studies.
Limits. These are active creators found through search, so they post regularly. View counts are public play counts on one day, which include replays. Thresholds come from a few hundred videos per band, so treat the top 1% figures as rough. The aggregated tables are in the CSV download.
